I am celebrating the amazing news that Iberian lynxes in the wild now number 2,401. I love the precision; it shows just how much every single lynx counts. Even more excitingly for me, the Portuguese lynx numbers have grown by another 20%.
The Iberian lynx was thought to be extinct in Portugal in 2002, and reintroductions in Portugal only began in 2014. The first wild-born cub was recorded in May 2016, named Nossa (Ours) below. The population has since grown to 354, according to the latest census. Incredible!

And yes I am still waiting for one of these to trigger my camera trap in the valley near my home in Portugal. Maybe this dispersal season will be the one?
